After English sample-meister Simon Green adopted the monkey moniker of Bonobo, he proceeded to get down to business: some brilliant singles earned him a berth at the Ninja Tune label, where his Animal Magic debut was widely hailed as “pure pleasure on a platter.” The 2003 follow-up, Dial M for Monkey, confirmed Bonobo as the leading shapeshifter of chillout music. This sophisticated maestro brings a jazzier and cooler sensibility than most of his peers; with the organic feel of a real composer he adds layers reminiscent of ‘60s spy movies, funk, worldbeat exotica such as sitar and tinkling cascades of glockenspiel notes, and oodles of trip-hop beats that anchor his imagination with scientific precision.
